At the Folk Art Centre in Balarampur, young enthusiasts from the surrounding villages gather to learn and practice the traditional Chhau dance. Under the guidance of veteran artists such as Anil Mahato, Jagannath Chowdhury, and Biren Kalindi, students master the fundamental steps and the expressive nuances of this martial dance form. Accompanied by the melodic rhythms of traditional instruments, the centre nurtures the next generation of Chhau performers, keeping the spirit of Maldi Chhau Shibir alive.
Workshops are regularly conducted with the vibrant community of Chhau mask makers in Charida, Purulia, and Seraikela, focusing on innovation and design development to create new product ranges that blend tradition with contemporary appeal. The sessions also strengthen digital and communication skills, helping artisans connect with wider markets and promote their craft effectively in the digital age.
Regular workshops are conducted with Seraikela, Kharsawan, Purulia (Manbhum), and Mayurbhanj Chhau artists to enhance choreography, movement, musicality, synchronisation, and stage presentation. Guided by masters and professionals, the trainings combine technical drills, rhythm practice, and theatre-based exercises to strengthen stances, movements, formations, and coordination with live music.
"We have come to know about the process of mask making at this Folk Art Centre. It wonderfully displayed the wide range of Chhau masks. We are very happy to be here and will tell our friends and relatives about the different type of masks."
